American Exhibit at Wiels

Wiels is a well-respected center for contemporary art near the Brussels Midi train station and is located in a nicely renovated former beer brewery. It organizes an exhibit featuring works of American artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957-1996). It will be on show from January 16-April 25, 2010.

Gonzalez-Torres was born in Cuba, grew up in Puerto Rico and moved to New York later on. He was known for his quiet, minimal installations and sculptures. Using materials such as strings of lightbulbs, clocks, stacks of paper, or packaged hard candies, his work is sometimes considered a reflection of his experience with Aids. Many of his installations invite the viewer to take a piece of the work with them (packaged candies, stacks of ultrathin sheets of clear plastic or unlimited edition prints).
