The Center for American Studies
The Center for American Studies was established in 1965 with a grant of the American Council of Learned Societies, the Belgian government, and a gift of 1000 books by the Fulbright Commission. It is now a department within the Belgian Royal Library (3rd floor). Its function is to manage and expand the library’s American Studies collection and its principal goal is to encourage research in all areas of American Studies. The CAS is at the disposal of students and researchers, Belgians as well as foreigners.
The main collections are:
- LAS (Library of American Studies): a collection of more than 30.000 titles in the social sciences and humanities of the United States shelved by subject in open stacks.
- LAC (Library of American Civilization): a collection of materials on ultracards (small microform) relating to all aspects of American life and culture from their beginnings to the outbreak of World War I. It numbers 14,000 titles or 20,000 volumes and is unique in Belgium.
Both collections are completely searchable via the online catalog.
Newspapers: The CAS holds archives of The New York Times and The Washington Post, both with indexes.
Proquest Research Library: a collection of more than 3,000 recent online periodicals in all academic disciplines -- mostly in full text or real image format.
The Center also serves as reference desk in American Studies.
Students and researchers are regularly informed about new books, conferences, and other useful information about American Studies.
Professors can request a guided tour for their students or teach a seminar at the Center and use its rich sources as guidance for the students’ research.
The reading room is open from Monday to Friday 10-12 and 14-16 and by appointment.
