Introduction
I love you, neither I! That's how one might summarize three centuries of relations between the two shores of the Atlantic. A history of passion and mutual fascination, unfold in a major exhibition by the Museum of Europe.
At a time where Europe seeks its new cohesion in the crisis and America is turning more to emerging powers, The Museum of Europe has chosen to mark the Belgian Presidency of the European Union with a major exhibition on the relations between Europe and the United States.
We all have something American in us, and vice versa. The exhibition underscores the common ground of a shared civilization not without showing our differences and divergences.
The drama is played out in four acts:
From a European America, a time of colonies then independence follows an American America that turns away from Europe... at the very same time that European culture, science and technology continue to inspire it.
The third act, American Europe, is when ambivalence prevails. Twice in half a century, the Americans rush to rescue an embattled Europe. Fascinated by the gIs and Hollywood, Europe becomes Americanized... not without reactions.
The last act, Europe and America, is being written at a time of uncertainty and of extremely intense exchanges between the two shores of the Atlantic, while still conscious of a shared history.
An exhibition that is deliberately educational, making use of the past to better understand the present to help build the future.
